Been on the road the last two days, but did manage to finally see Zombieland and oh my! It is all kinds of awesome. I'll have a full review tomorrow, but you might as well pre-order the Blu Ray on Amazon right now.
Just logged on to the Twitterverse and saw that the official cancellation notices of Joss Whedon's "Dollhouse" are coming through. No surprise really. I mean Fox and Whedon... it's like a Carla Gugino vehicle, that is to say, dead on arrival. Sorry for the zinger Carla, I still totally love you, but when you're name pops up on the credits, it is a Nielson nightmare.
Back to "Dollhouse." Joss has earned the right to put shows on TV. "Buffy" is one of the most successful productions in the last 30 years and its spinoff "Angel" was equally loved by fans. "Firefly?" Arguably one of the best hour longs to ever make it to the tube. And it is the home market success of "Firefly" that ultimately decided the fate of "Dollhouse."
The show was uneven and portrayed a somber tone with meandering story lines. There were mysterious back stories that we all wanted to see, but the bang up front wasn't really anything to keep the average viewer interested long enough to stick around for the payoff. It is not a bad show at all, and the Blu Ray video quality is mind blowing, but it doesn't hold the same charm as his previous creations. Dushku is a fabulous foil and/or second billed supporting female, but I just don't see building a show around her. Should you go back and watch it? I'd suggest it. Joss' writing capabilities are still top tier and there are pockets of awesome even if the overall meal is a little bland.
However, because of the success of "Firefly" and the subsequent thrashing Fox got for canceling it, Joss had a cache of good will built up at the network. So, season one of "Dollhouse" got a full run. The greedy bastard side of it is, to my mind, Fox greenlit season 2 based on the idea that his stuff sells discs. I think it wasn't cause they felt the owed him one (as many believe), but that they knew selling two season's of cancelled Joss Whedon would make them twice as much cash. There was never any plans to renew for a three, which just goes to show how shortsighted these twits in the suits really are. I mean, if you just said, "Joss, you get one more. Write it to finish it," then we, as fans, could get something much more complete and interesting. But, I guess you need "Lost" numbers to pull that off.
Time for one last treatment dolls, thanks for the fun.
