And down the stretch they come!!! 47 films to 400, can he do it ladies and gentlemen?! Can he do it?!!!! Yes he can;) Barely, under the wire even, but with a little less than an hour left in 2012, I finished a second screening of Cabin in the Woods and crossed the 400 finish line. And there was still time to watch the ball drop.
It was an interesting month for sure. I also unlocked my third midnight premiere achievement for the year with an opening night/morning screening of The Hobbit, which, despite some naysayer party poopers out there, I loved!! I began my theater year with Young Adult in January and finished it off with Hyde Park on the Hudson on Dec. 29th. People are calling it Bill Murray's best performance. I don't know about that, but it is a remarkable one in that I didn't find myself watching him and thinking "hey, that's Bill Murray!!" As one is prone to do.

Fav. Movie: Bones Brigade: An Autobiography. Stacey Peralta does it again! This time, he tackles his own creation, the infamous Powell Peralta skate team, the Bones Brigade. A team of youngsters that included the tiny likes of Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero, Rodney Mullen, and Tony Hawk. As far as modern skating goes, the Bones Brigade could not be more influential on the evolution of the sport. As a historical document, Peralta has assembled a visual textbook sure to appease skaters and non skaters alike. The footage is incredible, the interviews are amazing, the sheer insanity that this dream team of future superstars existed is mind blowing. What Peralta did in assembling the Brigade is borderline psychic, but as both the documentarian and the subject, he never grandstands nor begs for accolades. This is simply a great subject that he approaches with care and consistency in revealing its foundation and the height of its power. I don't expect this to win awards as critics dump it in the "skate video" category, but it should. My favorite doc of the year.
Fav. Poster: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Butter also had a great one sheet, but the moment I saw a giant standee version of this Hobbit poster, it was clearly a favorite for the year! All the dwarves in all their bearded dwarven glory are there like a hipster guide to facial hair! I kid, but this must have been really popular in Portland...
There it is, my first successful attempt at documenting every movie I watched in a calendar year!! I plan on keeping it up in 2013 and beyond, but let's take it one month at a time shall we? Soon to follow, my "Best of" for 2012 and a look back at the 400 movies I chose and how and why I watched them. Fun stuff to come, thanks for checking in!!
